Born on March 11, 1939 in Calcutta, Bani Basu is one of Bengali literatures most brilliant and ingenious women writers. From the begin of her career in the 1970s, she wedged the attention of critics rather than the common viewers. By setting her stories in modern West Bengal and populating them with realistic characters, she provided an meditative peep at contemporary society. She experiments with storytelling techniques, rearranging events and presenting readers with potent dialogs. Her stylized use of language, her burly sense of history and sociology, and her brilliant crafting are greatest displayed in her novel Maitreya Jataka. It is hailed by critics as a classic and an significant involvement to contemporary Bengali literature.
Her generally study novels comprise Gandharbi,Pancama purusha, and Ashtama garbha . Her small stories Svetapatharera thala and Radhanagara imitate her adaptability.
She is a professor of English in a college of West Bengal. She has received various awards include Tarasankar Puraskar, 1991: Ananda Puraskar, 1997; and the Siromani Award, 1997.
